{"id":456,"date":"2008-10-13T11:27:33","date_gmt":"2008-10-13T10:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cb.nowan.net\/blog\/2008\/10\/13\/the-story-behind-the-novint-falcon\/"},"modified":"2008-10-13T11:27:33","modified_gmt":"2008-10-13T10:27:33","slug":"the-story-behind-the-novint-falcon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cb.nowan.net\/blog\/2008\/10\/13\/the-story-behind-the-novint-falcon\/","title":{"rendered":"The story behind the Novint Falcon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Financial Times has an interesting article about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/4c7eaa0c-8989-11dd-8371-0000779fd18c.html?nclick_check=1\">creation and the innovative business model of the Falcon<\/a> haptics device :<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cb.nowan.net\/blog\/data\/2008\/10\/novint_falcon_anderson.jpg\" alt=\"novint_falcon_anderson.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153They said: \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcHow are you going to get game support when you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have an installed base [of players using Falcon], and how do you get an installed base if you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have games that support it?\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Anderson decided the solution to this conundrum would be to force a breakthrough with the games publishers. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Instead of telling publishers, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcWe want you to support the Falcon,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 we said, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcWe want to buy the 3D touch rights to your game.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153So instead of asking them to do something for us, we went to them and wanted to buy something that they didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t even know they had \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and we were the only company that could buy it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>(&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Novint was finally able to turn its attention to the consumer market when Mr Anderson acquired a design for the Falcon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hardware from a company called Force Dimension, making such a device affordable for the mainstream market for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>(&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>While Novint reported revenues of just $156,000 and a net loss of $4.1m for the first six months of this year, the chief executive says it has now reached an inflection point with wide acceptance of its new business model.<\/p>\n<p>Electronic Arts, the second largest video game publisher, is allowing Novint to develop versions of its <em>Tiger Woods<\/em> golf game, <em>Madden NFL<\/em> football, <em>Need for Speed<\/em> car racing and <em>Battlefield<\/em> and <em>Mass Effect<\/em> action titles.
