Here&#8217;s what I understand of it, based on <a href=\"http:\/\/3dvis.optics.arizona.edu\/publication\/pdf\/Scape%20supporting%20stereoscopic%20collaboration%20in%20augmented%20and%20projective%20environments.pdf\">those<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vcl.uh.edu\/~rcv03\/materials\/grant\/IIS-0301874.1064618311.pdf\">papers<\/a>, by its designer, Hong Hua, of University of Hawaii; <\/p>\n<p>The core of this technology is a Retro-reflective surface, that is a surface that &#8220;reflects back on itself a ray hitting the surface at any angle; exactly in the opposite direction&#8221;. This means that any light ray hitting such a surface will come back exactly where it comes from !<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cb.nowan.net\/images\/reflective.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s what it looks like in real life :<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cb.nowan.net\/images\/reflective_surface.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cb.nowan.net\/images\/reflective_surface_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nThe other part is the head mounted projective display in itself : <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cb.nowan.net\/images\/hmpd.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>The device embeds two projective lenses that project the 3d images onto the Retro reflective surface, which are then seen by the user: <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cb.nowan.net\/images\/hmpd_img.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> <br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cb.nowan.net\/images\/hmpd_img_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>This system has the advantage of adressing the multi-point of view problems that arise in a SAS Cube\/Cave, and providing &#8220;correct occlusion cues for both virtual and real objects and because each participants has his own individually correct viewpoint.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>\nThey also have built an entire collaborative infrastructure called Scape (stereoscopic collaboration in augmented and projective environments), and a room which is really impressive : <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cb.nowan.net\/images\/hmdp_room.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> <br \/>\nCan I test that somewhere? =)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was reading 3D User Interfaces and I stumbled across the definition of a HMPD.
