    The offensive on consumer 3D-stereo

Published at 15:02   Category VR Displays

It seems a lot is happening on the battle front for consumer stereoscopy. A coalition between screen/projector manufacturers and nVidia is forming a coherent response to these challenging issues :

    From Stereoscopy.com :

Forming the foundation for a new consumer 3D stereo ecosystem for gaming and home entertainment PCs, 3D Vision is a combination of high-tech wireless glasses, a high-power IR emitter and advanced software that automatically transforms hundreds of PC games into full stereoscopic 3D experiences. Designed to work with the new pure Samsung(R) and ViewSonic(R) 120 Hz LCD monitors, Mitsubishi(R) DLP(R) HDTVs, and the DepthQ HD 3D Projector by Lightspeed Design, Inc, 3D Vision unlocks crystal-clear, flicker-free 3D stereo imagery perfect for driving new experiences in 3D gaming, 3D movies, and 3D photography.

    Still from Stereoscopy.com :

ViewSonic Launches 3D-Ready FuHzion Line :

VX2265wm, 120Hz desktop LCD monitor : (…) In addition to the 120Hz frame rate support, the VX2265wm offers a 2ms video response time to remove virtually all motion artifacts and ghosting. Its 1680 x 1050 HD resolution allows users to further enjoy fast-action games. (…) The VX2265wm has an MSRP of $399 and will be available in January 2009.

PJD6220-3D, portable 3D-ready DLP projector : The PJD6220-3D is a portable, lightweight DLP projector and is 3D-ready for PC content, allowing consumers to watch high-quality 3D at home at a fraction of the price. With 2200 lumen output (…) The PJD6220-3D supports up to the native 1024 x 768 resolution at a true 120Hz frame rate. [It] also offers a 2000:1 contrast ratio. [Its price will be] $1,499 and will be available in February 2009.

    $1500 for a stereo projector !! That’s really nice =)

If only nVidia would release offical drivers for Windows XP instead of supporting only Vista, it would be even better.

And if you have difficulty setting up all your new toys, here’s a really nice guide on MTBS by Mark S. Mikunas on Setting Up a 3D Projection System With Classic NVIDIA Drivers“  (on XP it seems, with the not-so-old 162.50 drivers).

PS: Oops I forgot to tell you that maybe the PS3 is going 3D next year !!
