In 1966 Sutherland experimented with virtual reality (see Head Mounted Display above)
Ivan’s last paper about graphics, “A Characterization of Ten Hidden-Surface Algorithms” offers a taxonomy of the then-known solutions to this problem.
In the 1970s, the University of Utah was one of the few places in the world with a computer graphics focus. Led by Professor Evans and Professor Sutherland, the Computer Science Department at the University of Utah became the premier center for the development of computer graphics.
In 1968 they founded Evans & Sutherland
At left, students at University of Utah take the measurements of the surface of Ivan’s Volkswagen. The measurements are entered into the computer and the car is modeled on the display (right).
