    Laval Virtual 2007

Published at 11:17   Category Game, VR Applications, VR Devices, VR Displays, Virtual Reality, Virtual Reality DIY

These three great days have been very intense; holding the booth, meeting people, attending conferences, trying hardware and applications, being a jury member for the student competition. First things first, here are some pictures I took there. I should have taken more of the show..

There was not much new hardware, especially hardly any new expensive hardware. The novelty came from the use of existing hardware and better software. It seems that VR is at last being democratized; people create customized and cheap input devices, use webcams, recycle hardware not meant for VR etc.

    Laval Virtual - Conferences

Published at 13:51   Category Virtual Reality

    From the official page :

At Laval Virtual 2007, 4 major themes will be highlighted:

    • Envision the risk to save
(Wednesday April 18th - contact : VRIC07-risk@laval-virtual.orgThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it )

This full day symposium will introduce the last technical and scientific projections of virtual reality in the fields of: Prevention of the risks (natural or medical disasters, terrorism…), Simulation of scenarios of exit of crisis, Evacuation of people, Environmental risks, intelligent agents use in virtual environments…

    • VR & Human Behavior
(Thursday April 19th - contact : VRIC07-behavior@laval-virtual.orgThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it )

This full day symposium is dedicated to the contribution of Virtual Reality to the field of Human Behavior, and to the multiple applications that emerged with objectives of understanding, measure or treatment. Disciplines covered include: Virtual Reality; Addiction; Emotion; Conditioning; Cue exposure; Measures (e.g. psychophysiology, behavior, or performance); Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; Cognitive Rehabilitation; etc. In a general way, we expect contributions dedicated to therapeutic applications of Virtual Reality.

    • Virtually exploring our landscape through the time
(Thursday April 19th - contact : VRIC07-landscape@laval-virtual.orgThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it )

This one day symposium will present the last technical and scientific projections of virtual reality in the fields: Virtualized earth & countries; Visualization of disappeared, present or future places; Urban simulations; Simulation of events of the past; traveling without moving; traveling in time and space…

    • V&A Reality: break the deadlocks
(Friday April 20th - contact : VRIC07-deadlocks@laval-virtual.orgThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it )

Virtual, Mixed and Augmented Reality allow the creation of fascinating new types of user interfaces. The field is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together computer vision, computer graphics, user interfaces, human factors etc. Despite much progress in the basic enabling technologies, major obstacles are still limiting the wider use and acceptation of mixed systems. This symposium aims at analyzing these deadlocks. Papers that fall into the following categories are welcome: haptic feedback in mixed-reality environments/human-computer interaction/human factors/photo-realistic rendering/modeling and enforcing physical interaction constraints between real and virtual objects (vision based modeling, handling occlusion,..).

Laval Virtual : a mini video

Published at 16:38   Category Virtual Reality

Here’s a mini video filmed by a student of the Ecole de Design de Nantes, featuring the Virtual Brownie, Touch Light, Invisible and some others. This blog (in french) also has some articles about installations presented at laval (more and more and more).

Art & Science : the japanese way

Published at 10:57   Category Virtual Reality

At Laval Virtual, I fell in love with a japanese installation called Kobito: Virtual Brownies (videos available).
“Virtual creatures called “Kobito” interact with real objects and real people.”

A real tea box is pushed by the (virtual) Kobitos, which you can see only on the screen, augmented reality style.
If you block the box, the Kobitos will try to push harder. If you slap the box, the Kobitos will fall … Pure magic =)

Useless you say? No, this is interactive art! As said in this article :

‘ “Device art”, the latest craze in Japan at the moment, “is often gadget-like”, Kusahara continues, “but with carefully designed artistic intention.
Artists produce commercial products for available in daily life… (they) try to reach the widest possible audience.”
“Japanese culture does not draw a firm distinction between noble, “fine art” and “low art”, Kusahara explains.
Device art reflects the importance of aesthetics in daily life, or “beauty in the tools”. ‘

There were lots of artistic japanese installations, and that added poetry to the rather pragmatic “european” industrial applications.

But I was very surprised by the “western” students creativity. I was a member of the jury for the Interactive Fantasy competition,
in which students had 30 hours ( no sleep and caffeine included ;) to create an innovative game.
All the presented games had a very original way of interacting with the virtual world :
a home-made touchscreen to move ennemies with each of your fingers, a drum to set the speed of your horse, an organ to create fireballs ..

‘ “Virtual reality opens up a whole new space, where the work of art becomes dynamic”, where “the artist is no longer unique”, explains Alain Grumbach,
a virtual reality specialist who teaches computer science at the national school of telecommunications in Paris. ‘

Now you see VR is not only for geeks ;)

    SNCF R&D wins a Laval-Virtual 2005 Award

Published at 10:29   Category VR Applications, Virtual Reality

Virtual Training for SNCF Freight Agents

SNCF Innovation and Research Department just received the LAVAL VIRTUAL 2005 Award in “Automotive, Aeronautical and Transportation” for SIMURAT : simulator to teach how to inspect freight wagons. This system is a big step forward in inspector training, which allows them to use virutal techniques instead of a real train. Several training platforms are expected to be in service by the end of the year.

Laval Virtual 2005, is the seventh edition of this european exhibition on virtual reality, which has become the annual meeting for all the specialists. SNCF participates regularly: in 2000, it already had received an award in the “Industry” domain, for another simulator for the training of train drivers to control and operate points blades on high speed lines.

    (yes, that’s our baby ;)
